HUMANITARIAN CRISES IN LEBANON -- Need for solidarity and relief support [ by Nizar Zahreddine -- 05 August 2006 ]

Today is the 25th day since Wednesday the 12th of July 2006, 907 were dead, 3,293 were injured, and more than 913,760 Lebanese civilians were displaced under the most aggressive war attack by Israel on Lebanon.

Israeli aggression against Lebanon went far beyond a reaction to a military operation targeting its soldiers, as the capture of two Israeli soldiers is serving as a mere pretext for a major offensive attack by Israel on the aspiration and the morale of the Lebanese people. In addition to the above stated daily-increasing number of Lebanese victims, three airports were targeted and all the coastal ports and transports and communications infrastructure including bridges and power stations have been bombed severely and left unusable, not to mention the uncountable number of civil homes, buildings, and villages were bombed and grounded, on top of their inhabitants in many cases.

The Israeli army is targeting Lebanese civilians and civil infrastructure since the first day of the attack, and this act has been escalating daily to come up with a second massacre in Qana village south Lebanon on Sunday 30th of July 2006, killed more than 60 people at once, among them 37 were children between 1 to 8 years old (the first Qana's massacre was in 1996, killed 102 children and women who were hiding at the Unifel official center in south Lebanon). Moreover, this delay from the international community to condemn the Israeli attacks and to force Israel for a cease fire in Lebanon has given the Israeli government the political encouragement and an undeclared international cover which hindered the formation of any UN resolution for cease fire till now, and therefore the Israeli army continues to apply the system siege of the Lebanese people and fragmentation of Lebanese villages, towns, and cities into isolated areas, creating a major humanitarian crises and making Lebanon a shattered country. Israeli military aggression against civilians is in direct violation of the laws of war and particularly the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and Hague Regulations of 1907. We call upon the international community who is watching the daily massacre in Lebanon to immediately intervene in order to protect civilians and to end Israeli aggression against Lebanon.

Lebanon is in an urgent need for solidarity and relief support in order to face the challenges related to displacement and injuries. There have been more than 9 thousand displaced persons that were forced to leave their homes under the threats of Israeli aggression. Again, we call upon all to support the much-needed relief efforts in Lebanon by donating whatever funds they can afford to support the relief activities in Lebanon held by many local civil society organizations, including non-governmental organizations and individual activists, and other international groups and organizations (NGO's), who are coordinating their efforts to achieve higher efficiency and relevancy of relief work to answer to the direct needs of displaced people.

The basic needs of displaced people include:
Mattresses, cleaning detergents, canned food, bottled water, basic medicines (Panadol, basic allergy medicine, cough medicine, anti diarrhea …), candles and cooking gas lamps, cooking oil, bread, soap, clothes, pillows, blankets, cooking pans...etc.
